5 Pop Acts You Are Allowed To Like
September 17, 2007What’s wrong with pop music? It’s more of a rhetorical question, I don’t need a shitfull of unhappy Pitchfork fan boys preaching about the evil, spawn of Satan that is Pop Music. This goes out to those same Pitchfork fan boys who are desperately trying to prove their indie cred. Take a breather, guys. You can actually turn up KIIS FM and not feel completely suicidal. Here are the 5 Pop Acts you are allowed to like without getting your ass kicked by the indie police.
UPDATE: Read The Rap-Response to this post here.

Lily Allen on eMusic
You gotta love this bad ass Brit; in essence, she’s a likeable Lady Soveriegn. She’s so badass she’s beating out Chris Martin and Patrick Stump as Rap’s favorite Pop Hook, believe me, that’s bad ass. Stereogum loves Allen like no other, well second to the Arcade Fire.

Nelly Furtado on eMusic
There are few things in this world that can be recognized almost anywhere; you have coke, a woman’s breasts, and Nelly Furtado. Unless you and your stash of coke and porn have been hiding under a rock since the summer of 2006, you have, most likely, been graced my Nelly’s beauty and Timbaland’s stabbing deep-drum. Love and loathed,Nelly Furtado holds a unique groove and mellowness that when combined work amazingly well on the dance floor, and just as good on my iPod headphones.

mp3: Nelly Furtado – Promiscuous

Rihanna on eMusic
Basically, you weren’t allowed to like Rihanna, Top 40 Radio is a no-no for you.
mp3: Rihanna – Umbrella

Kelly Clarkson on eMusic
Kelly Clarkson is American Idol’s sole hope, and luckily she is one feisty motherf*****. I was surprised ol’ Mister Davis didn’t have a heart attack, I certainly wouldn’t want to cross paths with Miss Never Again. Aside from being a firely bitch, Clarkson can write a mean pop hook, or sing it, whatever. Since You’ve Been Gone was everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure in 2005,winning her an All-Star fanbase (Gwen Stefani, David Grohl, etc). Bite me Madden Bros.

Justin Timberlake on eMusic
Somehow Mr. Timberlake bypassed the indie-scene’s gaydar and has become a crowd favorite as well as a blogger and mixer’s wet dream. It seems the world can’t tire of Justin, he’s released 9 million singles and his videos are getting chronically worse, but those fly suits and damned
mixes do it for me. No one lays it down as well as my good friend Samuel. “If he were a skate board, he’d be down with all the cool kids.”

Very interesting post. I agree, some Pop Artists are just great, even if you don’t like Pop Music
Lily Allen is hilarious
What about Britney Spears?
You’d get your ass kicked if you liked Britney
pretty much.
haha.
what about Dragonette?!
New Young Pony Club are amazing too.
Good blog post.
I’d get my ass kicked for Britney, Gimme More is great!
i feel your pain man.
whats so great about Justin Timberlake
play any of his mp3s above and find out
I like this list, but I think it poses another interesting question:
If I were to get stopped by the indie police for having pop music blasting from my iPod, how worried do I REALLY need to be? Couldn’t the average person probably beat up an indie kid?
I’ll take a risk and keep playing my Maroon 5 and the like, thank you very much.
Well said TJ
Ill take on those starebucks sucking bastards.
Btw I heart pma and pitchfork. That’s how diverse I am
I like these artists, especially Rihanna. Shut Up and Drive is great.
And who said pop music is dead?
Justin looks HOT in that pic.
Thanks for all these mp3s
Great list Luis. I feel that Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake have been amazing pop acts for upwards of a year now. They are truly outstanding. I am begining to think Rihanna is made of the same calibre.
I was sold after “My Love”. Truly brilliant.
Justin Timberlake is a waste of space on my ipod, computer and life.
And the haters come….
@ Abe: That was seriously one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. Sure there’s not liking him, but denying his talent as a singer, producer, and performer — is just idiotic! One thing is to not like his music, but talent should always be recognized.
Idiot.
And that was one of the smartest things ever said on Pretty Much Amazing, Honey
I love Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, they’re both great
[...] mixtape is in response to the “5 Pop Acts You Are Allowed To Like” post I made earlier this week. The post was well received and I had some requests of making [...]
i really like this . spectacular , these are really happening !
Humph.. I only like Justin’s song, not him, himself. But the rest of them, I do like them..
